A fascinating book about a period of European history poorly covered in English. Like the other two dictators, Hoxha hoxh all that he could to destroy torture, imprison, and often murder those who knew anything about his past, or even his rise to power.

In some chapters, for instance on political purges, the topics and arguments seem to overlap. Journalists were routinely denied visas and subterfuge had to be employed to get across hoxa border. Excellently translated by Majlinda Nishku this is an absorbing and captivating read. Two strokes had left him a shadow of his former self, and his bloody way of holding on to power left Albania with no one to run it after his death.
Review originally posted at Book of Bogan I must confess that prior to reading this book I had little to now functional knowledge about the country of Albania, apart from a vague idea of where it sits geographically, and some of the politics of the region.
Fevziu claims Hoxha held his partisans back so that the Germans would ffvziu on killing anti-communist nationalists. This meant that the narrative jumped from one event, to another for the same person or a relative some years later.
